Christmas is a time for sharing, so I thought I could share one of my favorite Christmas stories with you… didn’t find an english translation, so here it is in the german original.

Nun gib mal Nüsse her!”

“Was sagst nun, Alterchen?” fragte es dann.

Reading a story from Cubey Terra a few days ago inspired me to write a short story based on the FIRST_GRID. Original artwork by yours truly

Grabbing the first coffee tab of the day, Zexxa pulled up her datascreen to scan her mail. A reminder for her monthly rejuv made her curse under her breath. No spare credits for that again this month. At this rate, she will look like the oldbie she really is. Scanning through the usual mail garbage, one screaming header caught her eye.

‘FIRST_GRID vacation implant, relive your youth!’

“How did this get through the spam net?
Haven’t seen a spam mail in years.”

Curious to see how the sender circumvented the complex security algorhythms of the global spam net, she clicked it open.

‘Experience the FIRST_GRID via the Lifecycle Module Implant.
Free limited trial option available.’

Options:

Lifecycle Module Implant Pro 50,000 $CR

Lifecycle Module Implant Basic 5,000 $CR

Lifecycle Module Implant Demo 0 $CR (special available only October 31st)

Below the demo option, a 3D object emitted pulsing hover text ‘WEAR ME FOR FREE TRIAL’.

Crunching on another coffee tab, Zexxa scrolled down her calendar, and saw lots of blank space. Not much going on in her life, with credit balance in the red.

“Hell, why not,” she muttered under her breath.
“Nothing doing here anyway.”

Right clicking on the demo, she chose WEAR, wondering if the implant was subcutaneous. A sudden coolness touched her skin, and her datascreen went dim, and then black.

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day1′————–

“Skipping, skipping and doing handstands.”
Zexxa’s subconscious put ancient words into the speech node of her brain module.
Raising her left hand, she touched her chest, finding a cool, heavy crystal of some sort on a chain around her neck. Trying to tugg it off, she encountered resistance.

“WTF?” The crystal seemed to be partially imbedded in her chest. Looking down, she could see that it glowed a bright, shiny yellow.

“Hey, wanna play with us?” A boy’s voice interrupted her struggle to remove the thing.

Looking around, her brain module went fuzzy, while trying to recover ancient terms to tell her what her eye attachments were telling her.

“Playground, grass, trees, flowers, sand, butterflies .. ”
Zaxxa’s subconscious flooded her with words that she only scanned about in ancient history ebooks.

The boy tugged at the hand, pulling her toward the structures. Skipping along with him, she saw others like her, children. Her last thought before surrendering
to the joy of the playground was “I am a child again!”.

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day2′————–

A phone jangled somewhere close to her ear. Still groggy with sleep, she groped for the ancient iPhone, thumbing it on.

“Babes, you up yet?”
“We are going surfing today, remember? Get your stuff together, and meet us at Bishara.”

Full of energy, Zexxa bounced out of bed and into the old_style fresher. Looking in the mirror in confusion, instead of seeing yesterday’s 6-year old child’s body, she
saw the shape of a teen. Raising her hands to the crystal around her neck, she saw that it sparkled a bright pink. It seemed to be embedded a bit deeper into her chest.

Hearing the ping of a TP offer, she poked her inventory for a surfboard and bikini, deciding to think about the mystery of her memory gap later.

“Awesome! Epics are rolling in!” She pushed off from the shore, paddling hard to catch up with the others. The day flew by in the heat of a summer day. It seemed so short.

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day3′————–

Admiring the length of her leg and the mega-high heel of her strappy shoe, Zexxa pranced in front of the full length mirror.

“Gotta go clubbing again tonight, that so rocked”, she thought as she poked through her Lingerie folder for something super sexy to wear.
“Maybe something violet, to go with the colour of the crystal .. “. As she voiced the thought alound, she felt the crystal vibrating with life and energy, beating louder than her heart.

“I must take it easy on the mood enhancers tonight, I seem to be missing chunks of time,” she thought to herself.

It seemed only a few days ago, that she was a child playing at a playground. And wasn’t it just yesterday her teenage boyfriend won the surf comp at Bishara?

“I must be going crazy,” she said outloud, “your life doesn’t just flash before your very eyes”. Turning toward the mirror again, she admired her sex kitten outfit,
thinking about all the guys that would be drooling over her at the club.

Getting into her brand new Lindman Industries Aircar, she decided to take the long way to the club. Arriving in Zindra, her name in flashing lights above the club entrance reminded her that
she was the main strip act for the first time tonight. She pulled her emote HUD out of her inv and put it on, activating her pole dance sequence as she sexy-walked inside the dark club.

Embraced by flood lights, her name on the lips of everyone present, she danced the night, and her life away.

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day4′————–

Lying in bed, feeling tired and depressed, Zexxa kept trying to remember what it was that she was to do today.

Sitting on the side of the bed, she realized she still had on her clothes from last night. She could not remember getting home at all.
Slipping her feet into her Sabo_birks, she poked the coffee maker for a hit of java. Looking in the mirror, she saw huge bags under
her eyes, her skin all flaky and spotted. Getting on the scale, she groaned out loud.

“This is totally not what I had in mind when I demo’d this FIRST_GRID vacation,” she thought as she tried to remove the crystal implant.
The implant was embedded deeply in her chest, and was a muted dark green colour. There did not seem to be a way to remove it.

Zexxa yanked repeatedly on the gold chain, trying to break it, getting weaker and weaker.

“If I could only rez my heads-up datascreen, and get back home before this goes any further,” was her last thought as she slid to the floor of her skybox in a faint.

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day5′————–

The rays of the afternoon sun glinted on the glass of water that held Zexxa’s false teeth. Strands of brittle gray hair covered the pillow, and fanned
across one withered, sunken cheek. Faded blue eyes fluttered open as Zexxa struggled to raise herself in bed, groping for her hand mirror.
With a shaking hand, she held it up and gasped in fear when she saw herself. The face of a very old woman looked back at her, and the crystal was all black!

Scrabbling feebly at the chain, she tried to jerk it off, but the necklace was deeply embedded in her flesh. Weeping and moaning, she struggled in wain trying to remove the implant, wishing
that she could bring the demo to an end.

With her last living breath, she screamed “Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! This can’t be all there is?

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day6′————–

As Zexxa’s body lay in her coffin, the greyed out crystal emitted hover text:

TO EXPERIENCE YOUR FIRST_GRID Vacation Implant and relive your life, choose one the following upgrade options before the object times out.
Choice #4 must be selected and paid before end of Lifecycle day 5.

1. Lifecycle Module Implant Pro 50,000 $CR
2. Lifecycle Module Implant Basic 5,000 $CR
3. Lifecycle Module Implant Demo NO LONGER AVAILABLE
4. Rejuvenate via new Alt 1,000,000 US Dollars

————–’lifecycle_demo_log_day7′————–

On day 7, the goddess Linda, the earth mother of the FIRST_GRID rested. Besides, it was outside business hours anyway.

Seems that writing whimsical little stories about Second Life is the thing to do now…

So here is it:

New worlds

“There are millions of worlds out there, they say.

I don’t know about millions, but there are at least several thousand, if not more.

The problem is, when you spread out a few ten thousand people over several thousand worlds, the average world is pretty empty.

You know that, you’ve been there, in a way.

Remember how it was on Secundus, where there was way more land than people? You would have to travel for days to meet another living soul, and it would be sheer luck to meet up with one of your friends. Now imagine that, multiplied by several thousand.

All this time since the exodus from Secundus after the First Ones left for good, I’ve been travelling all the news worlds, trying to find her … the woman that I’ve lived with for years on Secundus. So far, no trace of her.

The problem is, on every of these new worlds you start from scratch, you see. New name, new body, new face … and new friends. Unless you’re one of those rare types who don’t mind sharing the real self behind the avatar. Then there is a chance that you recognize someone from a previous life. But for most of us, entering a new world is like being re-born. So how do you find someone when all you know is that someone’s previous life? Especially with how everyone was sent hurtling off in some random direction when Secundus blew up?

There’s one small chance that I can find her … her love for growing things and her passion for making growing things “do her bidding”, so to speak. I’ve got gardening terminology coming out of my ears by now, but I’ll be going to every horticulture tradeshow on the grid until I find her.

Then I’ll try to find our mutual friends from back on Secundus. That’ll be even harder. But what else is there to do, when most worlds are empty, or reduce you to some kind of passive consumer of pre-digested content? If I wanted that I would still own a mediaPC …

But I guess I should be going … don’t want to bore you to death with my ramblings … and besides, I have some more worlds to check today before I turn in.”

I swill down the last drops of my synthetic coffee and start to rise from the bar stool.

All of a sudden, the woman on the next stool produces a strange, green, glowing flower from her purse, holds it out to me, and says “I made this … isn’t it pretty?”

I begin to tremble.

A very well written little thing, originally written by Marx Dudek on her blog. Such a shame that Phil won’t see it. Needs to be reposted on every source possible.

Dear Philip,

You indicated that your return to the helm would result in a return to transparency. While many of us have been waiting and hoping for this, it seems that we have the same opacity we learned to endure under Mark Kingdon.

If you want to instill confidence in us, Philip, you’re not going to do it with a quick Tweet that “SL is growing, not failing.” This is not communication, this is PR. If Second Life is indeed growing, tell us how it is doing so, something that gives us the confidence that you’re still genuinely connected with what’s happening in the grid. Because, Philip, the global economic catastrophes of the past few years have conditioned us to be deeply suspicious of voices that declare “Relax, everything’s just fine!”

At the present time, there is absolutely no reason for us to believe that Second Life is growing. The mainland is pockmarked with large swaths of abandoned parcels and plots of land are selling for as low as a L$0.5 per m2. We’ve just seen massive Lab layoffs, and the Lindens we relied upon to help us have been replaced with temps equipped with problem-solving laminate cards and no apparent sense of the grid. Mark Kingdon was fired in the middle of SL7B and no explanation was given. The Community Gateway Program was closed. The Teen Grid is being shut down. European offices that were just opened have been shuttered. Avatars United has been closed. And now the announcement that discounts for non-profits and education are being eliminated at the end of the year. Oh, let’s not forget Burning Life has been stripped of its Lab affiliation – as well as its name.

This is not to say that all of these decisions are terrible. Avatars United was a bad acquisition idea from the outset, and I hope that Mark didn’t spend too much money on it. I get the feeling, though, that Mark burned through a significant amount of the Lab’s money on his blind vision for the company.

As we enter into Second Life’s seventh year, the company seems – to many of us who are kept on the outside – to be forestalling bankruptcy for as long as possible.

The grid is starting to feel like Iceland.

We realize that Second Life beats with the heart of a corporation, not a democracy. We agree to Terms of Service, rather than forging Constitutions. We don’t get a vote – except for the money we spend on premium memberships, land auctions, estate purchases, tier, classified ad fees, show-in-search fees, and Marketplace commissions. Yet that money is truly the lifeblood of Second Life. For a very long time, I’ve tried not to become overly cynical about it all, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to remain positive. I look at my Linden Dollar balance and I wonder if now is a good time to cash out everything but the essentials, and I know that I’m not alone. Money talks, and lately, it seems that our money is the only voice that we have left in our little vitual world.

Second Life is wonderful, and there’s no other grid out there that can touch it. That does not, however, mean that Second Life can’t fail. One need only look at the demise of Blockbuster Video this year – a company that roared over the competition by early innovation, and yet died because management seemed deaf to changes in customer needs and choices.

Second Life is wonderful, but for most of us, it is not a necessity by any means. Any more than a daily Starbucks double-espresso cappucino is a necessity. Life in a virtual world truly is a luxury hobby.

Second Life is wonderful, but our concerns falling on deaf ears time and time again … isn’t.

Let’s face it, to the majority of the aware online community outside of our world, Second Life is a joke. But to several hundred thousand of us, it is worthy of a grand swath of our free time, our social time, and our creativity. The larger online world doesn’t “get it” – but we do. We bring our friends in and we show them around and we take them shopping and we ease them through the various rites of passage and we help them become the next wave of enthusiastic residents.

We are the evangelists. But like all evangelists, we need a message. We need vision. We need to feel as though we still belong. That we still matter. “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” And right now, there seem to be a lot of promises and a lot of reassurances, but no vision.

Your only Twitter post since SLCC is a seemingly-terse response to a comment from someone who stated their opinion that SL was failing because you don’t pay attention to social networking. Your response was “Oh yes I do! Plus, SL is growing, not failing.” If Second Life, at the end of 2010 – in the wake of massive layoffs, firings, cutbacks, closures, rate increases, and resident attrition – is indeed growing, then you need to explain to us how this growth is occuring. You seem to forget that we no longer trust that a company means what it says when it doesn’t provide evidence to back up irrationally exuberant claims of growth and stability. Stable, growing companies do not need to assure anyone that they’re stable and growing – its self-evident.

When communication fails, guessing and rumor and misinformation step in. Case in point, the Microsoft buyout rumor. I doubt I’m not alone in speculating that Linden Lab is seeking a buyer – perhaps somewhat desperately. Which leads us to ask, “Who might that buyer be, and how will it impact us?” And the flip side of the question, “What if Second Life is selling, but there’s no buyer – what then? Just how dire are things on Battery Street right now? And what happens if the time comes when we’re told that Second Life is indeed going dark? Will we be given the time necessary to back up years of memories?”

These are questions that are being asked, Philip. If our fears are unfounded, then you need to talk to us – and soon. But more importantly, you need to listen to us, and prove that you’re listening to us by having a conversation with us. And not just one token Tweet, but regular and substantive conversations with your residents. Because we are so much more than customers.

Or at least we like to think so.

Show me you’re listening.

Please respond.

Best Wishes,

The Avatar Known as Marx Dudek

PS: Give us back our identity. We are not “Residents in the Second Life™ Virtual World”. We are Second Life.
