Advertizing on the “Message of the day”…

Here’s a sort of interesting blog post from Linden Labs: New Advertising Opportunity in Second Life: MotD

My take on this is pretty simple.

4500$ for one block of ads on one day?

There is no business in SL that would be able to make a decent ROI on this.

DO THE MATH!

4500 us$ is roughly 1.15 MILLION L$, or in other words, a constant incoming cash flow of 100.000 L$ per hour during the time the ad runs. Now lets say you do have your own sim, and the sim can handle up to 40 concurrent avatars at a time before it totally lags out, and it takes the average person around ten minutes to come to your shop, decide on a product, and buy it. Let’s also say one out of five persons actually does buy something in those ten minutes.

The above numbers give us:

  • 240 different persons in the sim during an hour
  • 48 sales

That amounts to a minimum price of 2100L$ for whatever you sell, only to break even on the costs of the ad.

I don’t think there’s any shop in SL that could generate that kind of sales with any kind of mass market merchandise.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually think that some kind of paid advertizing in the viewer is a good idea… but:

  • the MotD is the wrong place, the start screen before you put in your password would be a better place… and that screen is HTML, it could actually have way more than one silly line of text.
  • The price is way too high for any in-world business; The ones that make enough sales to afford that price don’t even need advertizing… and any RL business can get better advertizing for the same money in other places.

Disclaimer: I am not a MBA, so I used common sense instead to arrive at those numbers.

Real Life…

It’s kind of fun to discover the Real World versions of things that you know from SL… and I’m not talking about the easy stuff, I mean who wouldn’t know a white Porsche 911 in RL?

But I just found this on the web:

Givenchy Pony Hair Gladiator Boot

and the other day I got me a pair of those from Aoharu/Anexx:

Looks familiar, doesn’t it?

Around Second Life in eighty hours – part 2

Hey guys,

welcome to the next part of our trip "Around Second Life in eighty hours".

This time we went over to Mont Saint Michel, a pretty impressive SL version of the famous medieval monastery a small island off the coast of normandy, france.

The whole island is a pretty impressive build, and I’d say it is definitely worth more than one visit.

The replica of the cloister and cathedral on top of the mountain are just awesome, and the crooked little lanes and alleys down in the city are so cute!

The place has some nice shops and cafes, but I would recommend wearing a translator, or running snowglobe when you visit the place, because a lot of the people seem to be japanese.

Maybe that is because the owner of the sims is japanese…

Anyways, without further ado, here are the pictures!

It’s hard to believe…

but true: every time you think “Those linden labs fools can’t do worse than that”, someone there raises his head and shouts a defiant “You wish!”.

Around Second Life in eighty hours – part 1

Hey guys,

we’re starting a series of posts here that will show you, loosely inspired by “around the world in 80 days”, eighty hours of exploring Second Life, loosely following a trail through “Search/Places”, trying to find cool spots that are at least vaguely inspired by places in the real world, if not modelled after such places.

So here, without further ado, is part one.

4 November 2009
Tim Horton’s New Home at Brimir

We set out on the start of our quest to see sights in sl that are based on rl at brimir sim, the new home of Tim Horton’s. I bought a box of Timmy’s donuts of course, and got a bit nostalgic about their iced capuccinos. We need to get some Timmy’s franchises here in Germany :-)

Stonehenge at Tefnut

Claims to be a full scale replica of the rl Stonehenge. We cannot attest to that, since neither of us have visited the real place, but it is a cool build. We also liked the fact that rezzing is allowed, so we rezzed our Rendevouz Couple tool, and wandered around hand in hand.

Glengarry Caste Ruin at Tefnut

After leaving Stonehenge, we wandered through Old York, and crossing Linden Road 8B, we entered the Glengarry Castle Ruin. More information about the real life Glengarry Castle and its area is available at
www.myglengarry.com .

Sankt Pauli  Landungsbrücken at Hamburg

A pretty good build of a famous area of Hamburg waterfront, showing the area where boat tours of the harbour begin. I had to take a close up of the sailboat necklace and earrings purchased at a previous exploration location, which was not worth blogging about.

Itsukushima Shrine at Sedig

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itsukushima_Shrine
The Itsukushima Shrine is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The SL version is a lovely location, albeit with the usual gift shop that no SL attraction seems to be without. It is so pretty and peaceful here. Note that the Slurl takes you to a skybox over the island, where the owner is selling his creations that were used in building the place.

Wandering around, we found tea house, where Yuukie entertained us by playing a Japanese Koto instrument.

News from Linden Labs…

Q: What’s the difference between a LL “higher-up” and a griefer?
A: A griefer doesn’t usually do permanent damage to SL.

more info here.

Customer Service, part two

…way better this time.

so i see this necklace on the forum, and think that it’d look nice with my wife’s new dress, and go to grab it for her…
only that its no transfer and there are no gift vendors or anything, so i’m IMing the owner…
… and she actually sends my wife the full fatpack, 10 colors or more, for the price of one… THAT is customer service dedication…

The store in quesion is Milk Motion at Cupcake

Noobs and “Edit appearance”

…they should really make the “How to change your looks” part on noob island mandatory.
Is being an eyesore an AR-able offense?
… I guess beyond a certain point it could fall under “Disturbing the peace.”
